Candlemas and Dreaming of Warmer Days

This was our first year hand dipping candles for Candlemas.  What is Candlemas?  Well, it’s many things, really.  It just depends on how you look at it!  It is a festival of light in between the winter solstice and spring equinox.  It is a festival marking the presentation of the infant Jesus at the temple (Luke 2:22-40.)  It is similar to Groundhog Day – a predictor of what the upcoming weather will be like:

If Candlemas Day be fair and bright,

Winter will have another flight;

But if it be dark with clouds and rain,

Winter is gone, and will not come again.

Although Teal and Pintail loved dipping candles, being allowed to light the candles when we got home was even more fun!

One of my favorite myths concerning the changing of the seasons is that of the Irish or Scottish hag Cailleach.  It is said that, “Cailleach gathers her firewood for the rest of the winter [on St. Brigit’s day, February 1st.] Legend has it that if she intends to make the winter last a good while longer, she will make sure the weather on 1 February is bright and sunny, so she can gather plenty of firewood to keep herself warm in the coming months.  As a result, people are generally relieved if [St. Brigit’s Day] is a day of foul weather, as it means the Cailleach is asleep, will soon run out of firewood, and therefore winter is almost over.” (from Wikipedia)

All this talk of weather has my dearest ducklings dreaming of warmer days.  They both decided to write summer wish lists last night.
